PLATINUM

Platinum is a naturally occurring white metal. It is rarer than gold, and much heavier and harder. Because of its hardness it can be used in a purer form than gold, usually at about 95%. Platinum is consequently more expensive than gold.

Many people believe platinum is scratch proof, but it can mark. The surface scratching of platinum jewellery is called “the patina of age” and is viewed as something desirable. The patina shows an item of jewellery is much loved and used, and gives it an heirloom feel.

Platinum Facts

Platinum does not ‘wear down’ and get thinner with use, as fast as some metals do. Instead, it develops a ‘patina’ (an aged look) over time, which is actually very desirable in the jewellery world.

In the 18th Century, King Louis XV of France declared that platinum was so rare, it was only the only metal fit for a king; meaning only royals could wear it.

Platinum has been given the ultimate status symbol when it comes to marketing;  you may have noticed when you apply for different levels of credit cards,  for example, there are different levels of service for silver, gold and platinum members, with platinum always being the highest tier to reach.

Like gold, platinum is also seen as an investment.

Is Platinum scratch proof?

Many people believe platinum is “scratch-proof”. In a way this is true, but not exactly correct. What actually happens is that while platinum doesn’t actually scratch (in the sense of losing particles), its surface can develop little bumps and ridges.

This “ridging” is natural, as the metal gets pushed to one side and another while the jewellery’s owner wears it. This is especially true for engagement and wedding rings worn on your hand day in day out, as they come into constant contact with hard surfaces.

How to Maintain Platinum Jewellery

Platinum is a highly durable and precious metal, but it still requires care to maintain its beauty and brilliance.

Polishing: Professional polishing restores the natural sheen of platinum and removes surface scratches. Please note that polishing removes a very fine layer of metal, so it should not be done excessively.

Storage: Store your platinum jewellery separately from other pieces in a fabric-lined box or pouch to prevent scratches. We recommend not to store them in the gift boxes provided.

Mindful Wearing: While platinum is resilient, it is advisable to remove your jewellery during heavy manual tasks to protect it from unnecessary wear or damage.

For complete peace of mind, you can send your platinum pieces back to The Diamond Store for our professional maintenance service, which includes cleaning and polishing for a small fee. This ensures your jewellery continues to look its very best.
